Interlocking Table: A Contemporary Interpretation of Traditional Joinery

Combining Tradition and Technology for a Unique Coffee Table Design

The Interlocking Table presents a contemporary interpretation of traditional interlocking timber joints, showcasing the fusion of art, architecture, design, and technology. Designed by Sawako Kaijima, this coffee table combines the beauty of traditional craftsmanship with the precision of modern digital fabrication techniques.

The Interlocking Table is a small coffee table composed of five elements with interlocking joints. What sets it apart is the cantilevering composition, which creatively utilizes both geometry and material to withstand structural loads. The table legs, in particular, are fully printed using Multi-Material 3D printing technology, featuring a wood grain-like pattern that represents the optimal grain orientation.

The inspiration for the Interlocking Table came from the designer's fascination with interlocking joinery, a technique employed in various areas from furniture design to building construction. By understanding the material, its structural performance, unique artisan techniques of fabrication, geometrically intricate assembly procedures, and innate aesthetic qualities, Sawako Kaijima was able to create a design that pays homage to tradition while embracing innovation.

The table top and middle leg of the Interlocking Table are CNC milled acrylic, while the two table legs with the wood grain-like 3D pattern and cap are multi-material 3D printed polymers. This combination of materials and manufacturing techniques allows for a seamless integration of form and function, resulting in a visually striking and structurally sound coffee table.

One of the key advantages of the Interlocking Table is its ease of assembly and disassembly. The table can be put together and taken apart using simple linear motions, making it convenient for storage and transportation. Additionally, the transparent quality of the table adds a delicate and sculptural quality to any space.

The Interlocking Table was designed as part of an academic research project funded by the SUTD-MIT International Design Centre and the SUTD Digital Manufacturing and Design Centre of the Singapore University of Technology and Design. This project explores the possibilities of interlocking joinery in the digital age, leveraging computer-assisted structural design and digital fabrication processes to create intricate and functional furniture pieces.

In recognition of its innovative design and meticulous craftsmanship, the Interlocking Table was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2017. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

The Interlocking Table is not just a piece of furniture; it is a testament to the power of combining tradition and technology. With its unique design, impeccable craftsmanship, and thoughtful integration of materials and manufacturing techniques, this coffee table is a true work of art that adds elegance and sophistication to any living space.
